UGHELLI/Nigeria: In a thought-provoking sermon, Venerable (Dr) Matthew Iyede, the Archdeacon of Otovwodo Archdeaconry, highlighted a critical factor contributing to the persistence of corruption in Nigeria.
Speaking at the thanksgiving service of Sir Festus Ahon, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Delta State, Ven. Iyede asserted that the deep-rooted issue of corruption thrives due to the insatiable desires of leaders.
The service, held at St. Matthias Anglican Church in Up-Agbarho, Ughelli, became a platform for Ven. Iyede to emphasize the necessity for leaders to cultivate qualities of honesty, integrity, and contentment. He urged them to wholeheartedly embrace these virtues as they carry out their responsibilities.
Ven. Iyede’s sermon, titled “Divine Purpose,” delved into the broader perspective that every facet of existence serves a purpose. He underscored that even Jesus Christ’s mission on Earth was to rescue humanity from eternal condemnation.
The Archdeacon extended his congratulations to Sir Festus Ahon on his appointment as Chief Press Secretary to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. He lauded the appointment as well-deserved and emphasized the accompanying weight of responsibility.
Quoting Ven. Iyede’s words of advice to Ahon, “As CPS to the Governor, you should convey the governor’s message to the people in a professional manner without twisting the message. Where necessary, offer credible advice to the governor when your opinion is sought,” the cleric stressed the importance of conveying accurate information while providing valuable insights when called upon.
Prayer and a sense of moral duty were central themes of Ven. Iyede’s message. He encouraged Nigerians, particularly those in positions of authority, to approach their roles with a strong sense of prayerfulness. His prayers resonated for lasting peace and unity in both the nation and Delta State.
Sir Festus Ahon, visibly gratified by the occasion, expressed his thankfulness for the opportunities he had received. He acknowledged the support of his family, friends, colleagues, and well-wishers in commemorating this milestone.
In his closing words, Ahon pledged to ensure that the government under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori delivers on its commitments. “We will ensure that Deltans get the best as far as good governance is concerned from this government because we all know that the policy thrust of this administration is anchored on the M.O.R.E. Agenda.”
Ahon also called on his fellow colleagues to consider him as an ambassador of their aspirations and encouraged their active participation in promoting the government’s initiatives.
Among the distinguished attendees were Hon. Talib Tebite, Executive Director of Projects DESOPADEC; Olorogun Jaro Egbo, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transport; among other notable personalities.
