Nigerian Scientists Unveil Genetic Breakthrough in Ambitious Plan to Wipe Out Malaria

OSOGBO/Nigeria: The Diaspora Solution Group Nigeria (DSGN) has announced an ambitious scientific breakthrough — the Malaria Attenuation Project — a bold genetic research initiative designed to eradicate malaria by neutralising its primary vector, the female Anopheles mosquito.

The landmark programme, expected to redefine Nigeria’s fight against malaria, will be officially launched on December 20, 2025, at Aloha Hotel & Resort, Osogbo, Osun State.

Led by a multidisciplinary team of Nigerian and international scientists such as Dr. Emmanuel O. Emenike and Dr. Olof Olsson, the project focuses on a pioneering research study titled “Research to Curb Female Anopheles Mosquito Breeding.”

At the heart of the initiative is a cellular and molecular correction process using highly precise CRISPR gene-editing technology. Under controlled laboratory conditions, researchers aim to genetically modify mosquitoes in ways that reduce their ability to reproduce and block transmission of the Plasmodium parasite responsible for malaria.

“Our goal is to harness the power of genetics to address one of Africa’s most persistent public health challenges,” Dr. Emenike said. “This research represents a major step toward malaria elimination using safe, science-driven methods tailored for Nigeria.”

Dr. Emenike emphasized that the project is meticulously engineered to be species-specific and environmentally safe, posing no threat to non-target organisms. He added that the initiative positions Nigeria at the forefront of global scientific efforts to end malaria across Africa.

The Malaria Attenuation Project is backed by a national alliance of partners including Sickle Cell Warriors and Troptions Unity Token, strengthening its reach and implementation. The initiative also enhances Nigeria’s scientific capacity by fostering collaboration between Nigerian researchers abroad and experts within the country.

DSGN noted that the project aligns fully with Nigeria’s National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) and will contribute significantly to long-term disease control and public health advancement.

The launch event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on December 20, is expected to attract policymakers, senior public health officials, and leading scientists from across the country.
