ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the Delta State Government, has concluded arrangements to organise a three-day capacity-building workshop for executives of School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) and desk officers across the 25 Local Government Education Authorities (LGEAs) in the state.
The workshop, themed “Governance, Finance, and Planning,” is aimed at strengthening the capacity of community-based school management structures to effectively support the development of the public primary education sub-sector in Delta State.
A statement issued by the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Hon. Samuel Mariere, said the training programme will also involve SBMC chairmen and secretaries from the LGEAs and will focus on enhancing leadership capacity, financial management practices and strategic planning skills among participants.
Mariere explained that the School-Based Management initiative was introduced by the Universal Basic Education Commission to promote active community participation in the management and development of public schools.
According to him, the School-Based Management Committee remains central to the initiative as it serves as a vital platform through which communities support the execution, protection and sustainability of projects and facilities provided by government in public primary schools.
“At the centre of the initiative is the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC), which provides support to communities in executing, safeguarding and sustaining projects and facilities provided by the government in public primary schools,” he said.
The SUBEB chairman noted that the training is designed to equip SBMC members with practical knowledge and skills required to plan, manage and protect school projects and resources within their communities.
He added that the workshop would strengthen community ownership of public schools, promote accountability and ensure the effective use and maintenance of government-provided facilities in the primary education sector.
Mariere further explained that the programme is expected to contribute to improved school enrolment and attendance by encouraging communities to take a more active role in supporting and sustaining quality basic education in their localities.
“The capacity-building workshop will also empower community stakeholders with the knowledge and tools required to support school development initiatives and improve learning outcomes for pupils,” he stated.
The SUBEB boss disclosed that the training, which is residential and strictly by invitation, will hold from Tuesday, March 17 to Thursday, March 19, 2026, beginning at 8:00 a.m. daily at Gares Place Hotel, located along Ughelli/Patani Road, beside AJ Eatery in Ughelli, Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.
