AWKA/Nigeria: Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has called on residents of the state to take decisive and proactive measures toward eliminating Tuberculosis (TB), warning that the disease remains a serious public health threat.
Dr. Soludo made the call on Tuesday in Awka in a message to commemorate the 2026 World Tuberculosis Day, themed “Yes! We Can End TB.”
Observed annually on March 24, World TB Day is aimed at raising awareness about the global burden of tuberculosis and intensifying efforts to eradicate the disease.
In her message, the governor’s wife expressed concern over the continued spread of TB, noting that the disease still affects thousands of individuals and families, with troubling mortality rates recorded in many communities.
“Ending TB is possible, but the responsibility lies on all of us to take smarter and more sincere actions,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Dr. Soludo expressed optimism that the disease could be significantly reduced through sustained public health interventions and community cooperation.
She reminded residents that TB diagnosis and treatment are free in public health facilities and several private hospitals across Nigeria, urging people to take advantage of these services.
Dr. Soludo also listed key symptoms of the disease, including persistent cough lasting more than three weeks, chest pain, coughing up blood or phlegm, fever, night sweats, fatigue and unexplained weight loss, advising individuals experiencing such signs to seek prompt medical attention.
“Once you or anyone around you notice any of the symptoms, rush to any nearby health facility and get checked without hesitation,” she advised.
She stressed that early detection and timely treatment remain critical to controlling the spread of tuberculosis and reducing fatalities.
Calling for a united front against the disease, Dr. Soludo urged communities to work collectively to end TB-related deaths.
“Together in action, we can end TB deaths in our communities,” she said.
