UGHELLI/Nigeria: Momentum is building within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State as key political blocs intensify pressure on the party’s founding leader, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, to declare for the Delta Central Senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The groups, comprising the Emerhor Political Family (EPF) and the Delta Central Youth Council (DCYC), said Emerhor’s sacrifices, consistency, and role in nurturing the APC from inception place him in prime position to represent the district at the National Assembly.
Emerhor, a businessman-turned-politician, holds the distinction of being among the earliest standard-bearers of the APC in Delta State, contesting the senatorial race shortly after the party’s formation in 2013 and later flying its governorship flag in 2015—efforts widely acknowledged as instrumental to the party’s current structure in the state.
The renewed call was made during a strategic visit to his country home in Evwerni, Ughelli North Local Government Area, led by Chairman of the Elders/Leaders of the Emerhor Political Family, Chief Martins Owhoevwo, alongside notable figures including former Ambassador, His Excellency Frank Efeduma.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Owhoevwo described Emerhor as a rallying point within the APC, whose inclusive leadership has sustained unity and growth over the years.
“Our leader represents calmness, openness, and inclusiveness. What we have today as APC in Delta State is the product of deliberate sacrifice and a commitment to building people. From humble beginnings, we have grown into a formidable political force under his guidance,” he said.
He added that the political family has become deeply aligned with Emerhor’s vision, stressing that his leadership has not only built a structure but also inspired a generation of emerging leaders.
Also lending his voice, APC House of Assembly aspirant for Uvwie, Mr. Mudiaga Okorefe, called for fairness and broader inclusion in the distribution of political opportunities within Delta Central.
“It should not be only one child that keeps feeding from the same source,” he said, using a local analogy to underscore the need for equity in representation.
Okorefe described the visit as a unified appeal, assuring Emerhor of a ready and mobilised support base awaiting his declaration.
In the same vein, Sir Godwin Ohwoekevwo urged the APC leader to heed the call of his supporters and step into the race, pledging total grassroots mobilisation.
“Leadership is not given lightly; it is earned. He has paid his dues through years of sacrifice and service. We are here to encourage him to say yes and lead us once again,” he said.
Other stakeholders, including Dr. Kennedy Okparavero, Comrade Enakurerhi Oghenemine, Deaconess Margaret Akpode, and DCYC State Coordinator, Comrade Joseph Edegware, also endorsed the call, urging party authorities to recognise Emerhor’s contributions to the APC’s growth in Delta State.
In his response, Olorogun Emerhor thanked the delegation for their loyalty and steadfast support spanning over a decade but cautioned against rushing into a decision.
“I deeply appreciate your sacrifices and commitment since 2013 when this political family took shape. Your support has been the backbone of our journey,” he said.
He reflected on his pioneering role in establishing the APC in the state, noting that the party’s early struggles and eventual growth were built on resilience and collective effort.
“I was among the first to fly the APC flag in Delta shortly after its formation, and by 2015, I had the privilege of contesting as governorship candidate. Those were defining moments that helped shape what the party has become today,” he stated.
Emerhor noted that the APC has since transformed into a stronger and more inclusive political platform, strengthened by evolving alliances and internal cohesion.
“Today, we are more united and better positioned as a party. I am confident that we will deliver for our President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and continue to support the administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori,” he added.
On the specific demand for him to contest the Delta Central Senate seat, Emerhor acknowledged the confidence reposed in him but maintained that consultations were ongoing.
“I understand your expectations and I value the trust you have placed in me. Having contested when the party was still finding its footing, I have no fear stepping forward now. However, decisions of this magnitude require careful consultation,” he said.
He pointed to internal party dynamics and the role of leadership in shaping the outcome of the forthcoming primaries, expected to be conducted in line with the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines.
“We must align with the realities within our party and respect its leadership structure. The process ahead will involve critical decisions, including the mode of primaries,” he noted.
Reaffirming his commitment to due process, Emerhor assured his supporters that they would be duly informed once consultations are concluded.
“I am fully prepared and capable to serve, but I must ensure that whatever decision is taken reflects the collective interest of our party and our people. When consultations are complete, you will hear from me directly,” he said.
