ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Government has intensified its push for improved electricity supply, moving to optimise the output of existing power infrastructure as part of a broader plan to stabilise energy delivery across the state.

Leading this renewed drive, the Commissioner for Energy, Micheal Anoka, conducted an inspection of the Okpai Independent Power Plant in Ndokwa East, signalling a more hands-on approach by the state in tackling persistent power challenges.

The visit, officials said, forms part of a deliberate strategy to strengthen the electricity value chain by maximising current assets while positioning the state for future expansion in power generation and distribution.

Anoka explained that the move followed a directive from Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to fast-track actionable solutions capable of delivering more reliable electricity to residents and businesses.

He noted that the administration is shifting focus towards practical interventions, particularly the efficient utilisation of facilities such as the Okpai Power Plant, which remains one of the most significant energy assets within the state.

According to the commissioner, the Okpai plant currently generates about 480 megawatts of electricity, with ongoing expansion expected to significantly boost its capacity.

He disclosed that the second phase of the project will add an estimated 450 megawatts, bringing total output to approximately 930 megawatts upon completion.

Anoka said the government intends to leverage the increased capacity to improve electricity supply across Delta, stressing that access to stable power remains central to the administration’s development agenda.

He also referenced a meeting held on April 8 with Power Acumen Consulting Limited, where practical pathways to achieving sustainable electricity supply in the state were presented.

During the inspection, the delegation was received by Mr. Francis Enebeli, who confirmed both the current generation level and progress on the plant’s expansion phase.

Reiterating the broader vision of the administration, the commissioner said the state is working towards becoming one of the first in Nigeria to attain a fully electrified economy.

He added that improved electricity supply would stimulate economic growth, attract industrial investments, and create employment opportunities, while also improving the overall standard of living for residents.

Anoka assured that the government remains focused on delivering tangible outcomes, emphasising that the current efforts are driven by measurable goals rather than policy rhetoric.
