AWKA/Nigeria: The Federal Road Safety Corps, Anambra State Command, on Saturday marked Valentine’s Day with a humanitarian outreach to road traffic crash victims and other patients in hospitals across the state, offering support, encouragement and relief materials as part of efforts to promote compassion beyond the highways.
The initiative, carried out in Awka, featured visits to patients receiving treatment at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital and Regina Caeli Hospital, where beneficiaries received cash donations and words of encouragement from officials and volunteers.
Speaking with journalists after the visits, the Sector Commander, Bridget Asekhauno, said the gesture reflected the essence of the Valentine season, emphasizing that the corps’ responsibility does not end with rescuing accident victims but extends to supporting them through recovery.
“We visit accident victims and other patients to show care and provide support within available resources. It is a continuous exercise aimed at giving hope to victims,” she said, while calling on individuals and organisations to partner with the corps in expanding humanitarian interventions.
The outreach was conducted in collaboration with the Road Safety Officers’ Wives Association and philanthropist Abraham Oti, whose contributions helped provide both emotional and financial assistance to patients.
Chairperson of ROSOWA, Ngozi Ezeala, explained that the association used the Valentine season as an opportunity to identify with crash victims and extend compassion to those undergoing treatment, noting that such gestures reinforce the culture of empathy and social responsibility.
Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the visit, offering prayers for the donors and describing the support as timely encouragement during a difficult period. Valentine’s Day, celebrated annually on February 14, is widely observed as a time for expressing love and kindness toward family, friends and vulnerable members of society.
