OBIARUKU/Nigeria: Fear and anxiety have gripped residents of Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State following a disturbing wave of kidnappings across several communities, with at least four abductions reported within days in Ebedei and Obinomba communities.
The latest incidents occurred in Ebedei Community, where two persons were reportedly abducted from their homes in Obi-Iloh Quarters on Tuesday night, May 26, while another resident was kidnapped on Thursday night, May 29, in Ukwu-Ole Quarters of the same community.
Residents said similar incidents were also recorded in neighbouring Obinomba during the same period, raising fears over the growing activities of kidnappers within the Ukwuani axis.
Community sources disclosed that the abductors initially demanded a ransom of N50 million for the release of the two victims kidnapped in Obi-Iloh Quarters, throwing their families and loved ones into distress.
The development has heightened concerns among residents, many of whom say the rising insecurity is threatening the peace and socio-economic activities of communities in the area.
In response to the incidents, chiefs and community leaders from the affected quarters held consultations and called for urgent security measures to stem the tide of kidnappings and other criminal activities.
The community leaders urged for enhanced surveillance and coordinated security patrols, particularly at night, across vulnerable areas linking Obi-Iloh and Ukwu-Ole quarters and adjoining communities.
Meanwhile, residents of Obiogene have commenced a fundraising effort to support the families of the two victims abducted in Obi-Iloh Quarters. As part of the initiative, adult males are contributing N4,000 each, while adult females are contributing N3,000 each towards efforts aimed at securing the release of the kidnapped persons.
Community members disclosed that over N100,000 had already been realised through voluntary contributions, while appeals have been made to well-meaning individuals and public-spirited organisations to assist the affected families.
Residents have also called on security agencies and the Delta State Government to urgently strengthen security presence across Ukwuani communities, warning that the recurring incidents could further endanger lives and livelihoods if decisive action is not taken.
The latest kidnappings have sparked widespread concern among residents, who are demanding swift intervention to secure the release of those in captivity and restore confidence in the security of communities across the local government area.
Efforts to obtain the reaction of the Delta State Police Command were unsuccessful as of press time. Calls placed to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, were not returned, while text messages and WhatsApp enquiries sent to his mobile phone had yet to receive a response.
