OBINOMBA/Nigeria: Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Thursday led tributes to the late Chief (Barr.) Matthew Egwuenu, father of Arise TV anchor Ojy Okpe, describing him as a distinguished public servant whose life was marked by discipline, integrity and enduring impact.

Speaking at a vigil mass held at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, George’s College field, Obinomba, in Ukwuani Local Government Area, the governor said the late Egwuenu’s legacy transcended his years, reflecting a lifetime of dedicated service to the nation and humanity.

Commiserating with the bereaved family, particularly Ojy Okpe and her siblings, Oborevwori noted that the deceased’s life was defined not merely by longevity but by the positive difference he made in the lives of others.

The governor, who lauded the large turnout of sympathisers, including council chairmen and leaders from across Ndokwa Nation, said their presence underscored the unity and shared respect for the late patriarch.

“Your presence here today is a clear demonstration of the value we place on one another, especially in moments of grief,” he said.

Oborevwori described the late Egwuenu as a distinguished personality who rose through the ranks of the Nigeria Police Force to retire meritoriously as a Commissioner of Police after years of dedicated service.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, the governor said the deceased would be remembered for raising disciplined and accomplished children who continue to reflect his values.

According to him, the true measure of a person’s life lies in the legacy left behind, stressing that Egwuenu’s contributions would continue to resonate through his family and the wider community.

“When you see the quality of his children, their courage, brilliance and integrity, you cannot but acknowledge that this is a man who lived well,” Oborevwori stated.

He urged the Ndokwa Nation to continue to support and stand by the Egwuenu family in their time of grief, noting that the outpouring of love and solidarity at the vigil was a testament to the late chief’s positive influence.

While acknowledging the pain of loss, the governor encouraged the family to draw strength from the values instilled by their father and to sustain his legacy.

He added that the funeral rites should serve not only as a period of mourning but also as a celebration of a fulfilled life dedicated to purpose and meaningful contributions.

In his homily, Revd. Fr. Vitus Ogbonna reminded the congregation that death is an inevitable passage for all, describing it as a debt every human must pay.

He urged the bereaved family to remain steadfast in faith and uphold the legacy of their father despite the weight of grief, drawing comfort from the assurances in Psalm 23.

The cleric noted that life unfolds in seasons, encouraging the family to take solace in the impactful life their father lived and the enduring values he left behind.
