BORI/Nigeria: The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement with the Federal Government, declaring that after more than three decades of conflict, the time has come to pursue a lasting and peaceful resolution to the long-standing Ogoni question.

The position was adopted at the Ogoni National Congress, convened by MOSOP on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at the MOSOP Secretariat, Peace and Freedom Centre, Bori, in Rivers State.

The congress drew broad participation from across Ogoniland, including community leaders, traditional rulers, youth and women groups, politicians, students, professionals and other stakeholders, who deliberated extensively on issues affecting the future of the Ogoni people.

In a communiqué jointly signed by MOSOP President, Fegalo Nsuke, and Secretary-General, Alex Akori, participants welcomed the ongoing dialogue between the Federal Government and the Ogoni people being facilitated by the Ogoni Dialogue Committee under the coordination of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).

The congress noted that 33 years after the conflict between the Ogoni people and Nigeria’s oil industry escalated, the current dialogue presents a significant opportunity to address longstanding grievances and chart a new course built on justice, mutual respect and sustainable development.

Participants expressed optimism that the engagement would produce mutually beneficial agreements capable of resolving the issues that have defined the Ogoni struggle for decades.

The congress, however, urged the Federal Government to ensure that every agreement reached through the dialogue process is implemented transparently, honestly and in good faith, stressing that confidence in the process would depend largely on the government’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations.

The gathering also voiced concern over the increasing incidence of inter- and intra-community conflicts across Ogoniland, describing the trend as a major threat to peace, unity and development.

It called on all parties involved in such disputes to embrace dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution rather than violence, while urging Ogoni people to promote tolerance, mutual respect and good neighbourliness in their communities.

On security, the congress expressed deep concern over the activities of herders in parts of Ogoni communities and directed the leadership of MOSOP to immediately engage the leadership of the Northern community in Rivers State with a view to finding an amicable and peaceful solution to the issue.

The congress reaffirmed MOSOP’s commitment to peace, justice and the protection of the rights of the Ogoni people, expressing hope that the ongoing engagement with the Federal Government would mark the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between the Nigerian state and Ogoniland.
