OBIARUKU/Nigeria: Delta State Commissioner for Finance, Chief Okenmor Fidelis Tilije, on Monday boosted grassroots economic activities in Ukwuani Local Government Area with the distribution of ₦100,000 cash grants each to more than 60 petty traders and farmers in INEC Ward 10.

The empowerment initiative, which attracted beneficiaries from several communities within the ward, was aimed at supporting small-scale businesses and local farmers struggling with financial challenges amid prevailing economic conditions.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony, Tilije said the intervention formed part of his commitment to improving the living conditions of people at the grassroots through practical economic support capable of encouraging self-reliance and productivity.

He explained that many rural traders and farmers possess the drive and entrepreneurial spirit to succeed but are often constrained by limited access to capital needed to sustain or expand their ventures.

According to the Commissioner, the cash support should be seen as an investment opportunity rather than a mere handout, urging beneficiaries to utilize the funds responsibly for the growth of their businesses and farms.

“This support is meant to help you grow. Invest it wisely, expand your farms and businesses, and let it become a turning point for your families and your future. Financial discipline and commitment are key,” Tilije advised.

Many of the beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the Commissioner for what they described as a timely and impactful intervention that directly addresses the economic realities facing rural dwellers.

Some petty traders said the grant would enable them to restock their shops and improve daily sales, while farmers noted that the support would help them purchase seeds, fertilizers and other farm inputs ahead of the planting season.

Observers at the event described the initiative as a demonstration of responsive and people-focused leadership, particularly at a time when many small business owners and rural farmers are seeking support to remain economically stable.

The empowerment programme also aligns with the MORE Agenda of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration, which prioritizes inclusive development, youth empowerment, rural growth and sustainable economic opportunities across Delta State.

Beyond the financial assistance, the event created an atmosphere of renewed hope and optimism among beneficiaries, many of whom said the intervention had restored their confidence and determination to build better livelihoods for themselves and their families.

For residents of Ukwuani Ward 10, the exercise represented more than just a cash distribution programme, as many beneficiaries described it as a rare gesture of recognition, inclusion and grassroots empowerment.
