Uromi Junction Flyover Will Boost Trade, End Gridlock on Lagos–Asaba Highway — Oghenesivbe

Director-General of the Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communications, Dr. Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe,

ASABA/Nigeria: The Director-General of the Delta State Bureau for Orientation and Communications, Dr. (Barr.) Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, has said that the N59.7 billion Uromi Junction Flyover in Agbor will serve as a major economic catalyst and lasting solution to chronic traffic congestion along the Lagos–Asaba Expressway.

Oghenesivbe made this known in a statement on Sunday ahead of Monday’s groundbreaking ceremony to be performed by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori at the busy Uromi Junction axis of the Trunk “A” highway in Ika South Local Government Area.

According to him, the flyover is a strategic intervention designed to decongest one of the most heavily trafficked and accident-prone junctions on the Lagos–Asaba corridor, which serves as a key commercial gateway linking Delta State to major markets and industrial centres across the country.

“For years, traffic bottlenecks at Uromi Junction have slowed down the movement of goods and people, increased travel time, raised transport costs and undermined commercial efficiency along this critical highway,” Oghenesivbe said. “This flyover will change that narrative by ensuring smoother traffic flow and faster turnaround time for long-haul and intra-city vehicles.”

He explained that the project would significantly enhance the ease of doing business in Agbor and surrounding communities by improving access, reducing logistics delays and strengthening inter-state trade between Delta State and its neighbours.

“The economic implications are enormous. With improved traffic movement, businesses will operate more efficiently, investors will find Agbor more attractive, and commercial activities will expand. This project will directly and indirectly stimulate job creation and local enterprise growth,” he said.

Oghenesivbe recalled that the Uromi Junction had over the years become a major safety hazard, particularly for articulated vehicles and petroleum tankers navigating the poorly configured intersection, leading to frequent accidents, fire outbreaks and the destruction of lives and property.

He noted that beyond easing congestion, the flyover would drastically improve road safety by separating traffic streams, protecting pedestrians and eliminating dangerous conflict points at the junction.
“This project will save lives. It will remove a notorious black spot on the Lagos–Asaba Expressway and replace it with a modern, well-engineered traffic solution that prioritises safety and efficiency,” he said.

The Bureau DG added that the flyover, to be constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, would also enhance the urban outlook of Agbor, introduce pedestrian walkways and improve the overall aesthetics of the area.
He said the project forms part of Governor Oborevwori’s broader infrastructure expansion programme under the N230 billion mega development initiative, aimed at repositioning Delta State’s road network to support economic competitiveness and sustainable urban growth.

Oghenesivbe further described the Lagos–Asaba Expressway Flyover as the most expensive single flyover project embarked upon so far by the Oborevwori administration, describing it as a bold investment in long-term mobility and productivity.

He disclosed that the 2026 budget would consolidate this infrastructure drive, with about N1.6 trillion out of the proposed N1.7 trillion budget earmarked for capital projects across the state.

“Governor Oborevwori remains committed to equitable development across the three senatorial districts and to delivering infrastructure that has direct economic value to the people,” Oghenesivbe said.

He urged residents of Agbor and road users to cooperate with contractors during construction, noting that the short-term inconveniences would give way to lasting economic and mobility benefits for the state.
