OBINOMBA/Nigeria: Family members, friends and Christian brethren on Saturday paid emotional tributes to Mrs. Nnenna Nwanwene (nee Ekwueme), describing the late wife, mother and church worker as a woman whose life was defined by faith, kindness, sacrifice and service to others.
Nwanwene, who died on May 9, 2026, at the age of 45, was buried at Obinomba, Delta State, bringing together relatives, friends and members of the church to bid farewell to a woman they said had made a lasting impact on their lives.
Born on November 29, 1980, into the royal family of late Eze Kevin and Ugoeze Virginia Ekwueme, Ezeoba 1 of Obokofia, Egbema, in Oloshi Autonomous Community, Nnenna was remembered not only for her role as a wife and mother but also for her commitment to Christian service and the welfare of others.
Her husband, Engr. Paul U. Nwanwene, described her as his companion, confidant and greatest blessing, saying she was much more than a wife to him.
According to him, she was the heart of their home, a source of strength, peace and unconditional love whose wisdom, prayers and sacrifices helped shape their family.
He also recalled her dedication to the service of God as a chorister, teacher of God’s Word and minister, saying her legacy of love, humility, faith and selfless service would continue to guide the family.
Her children similarly remembered their mother as a source of love, discipline, faith and security.
One of her sons, Mishael Chukumnonso Nwanwene, described her as his mother and best friend, recalling the sacrifices she made to ensure that her children were comfortable and well cared for.
Another son, Anderson Chukuneku Nwanwene, said their mother performed numerous roles in the family, describing her as the glue that held them together, their shield against the harsh realities of life, their moral compass, pastor, friend and the person who transformed their house into a home.
For her daughter, Paula Konyenasor Nwanwene, the loss remained difficult to comprehend, particularly because of the close bond they shared. She described her mother as a “Proverbs 31 woman” and promised to preserve the values of faith, family, kindness and compassion that she had instilled in her.
The tributes extended beyond the immediate family, with Engr. and Mrs. C. N. Nwanwene describing the late Mrs. Nwanwene as much more than a sister-in-law.
They said she was “a daughter, co-wife and a friend” who was always welcoming, not only to members of the Nwanwene family but also to everyone who came around the family.
According to them, although Nnenna left too soon, her warm smiles would remain an everlasting legacy to all who knew her, particularly her husband, children and the extended Nwanwene family.
“Rest in peace,” they concluded in their tribute.
Other relatives also remembered her as a woman whose warmth and kindness transcended the immediate family.
Her sister-in-law, in another tribute, recalled seeing Nnenna radiating joy and warmth among family members during their mother’s 30th transition anniversary on November 30, 2025, at the memorial Mass at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Obinomba.
She said the gathering, which was followed by a reception for well-wishers, demonstrated Nnenna’s love for family and the strength of their bonds, adding that no one could have imagined it would become one of their final treasured memories with her.
Other members of the extended family described Nnenna as a peacemaker, a virtuous woman and “kindness personified,” noting her ability to listen without judgment, encourage people and make those around her feel valued.
Her deep Christian faith also featured prominently in the tributes.
Nnenna’s commitment to the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) was recalled by several church members. She served in different capacities, including the Choir, Sunday School and as an altar minister.
She was also remembered as a Sunday School teacher and leader who invested her time and energy in teaching God’s Word and mentoring others.
Pastor Toyin F. Sanni, PIC, The Life Place Zone, Lagos Province 92, described her as more than a worker and minister in God’s house, but a co-labourer, sister and friend.
He recalled her commitment to ministerial standards, punctuality, preparation, excellence and reverence, saying her conduct provided a model of godliness for others to emulate.
Another church tribute identified her as the Zonal Sunday School Leader of RCCG Area 1, Zone 1, describing her as a faithful minister, exceptional teacher of God’s Word, compassionate mentor and “mother in Israel.”
The tribute noted that her leadership was marked by humility, diligence, excellence and genuine love, while her commitment to raising teachers and nurturing believers had strengthened the church ministry.
Her educational background also formed part of the account of her life. She attended Dom Domingos College, Warri, Delta State, before proceeding to the University of Port Harcourt, where she studied Human Physiology in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences.
After graduating in 2003, she undertook her National Youth Service Corps programme in Gombe State during the 2004/2005 service year, serving at the College of Health Technology.
In November 2005, she married Engr. Paul U. Nwanwene, and their union was blessed with three children.
Those who paid tribute to her said her greatest investment was the values she passed to her family and the people whose lives she touched.
The family said she placed the needs of her children ahead of her own, worked tirelessly for their welfare, cared for them during illness and remained committed to giving them a strong foundation in faith and character.
Her death on May 9 was therefore described as a major loss to her husband, children, relatives, church and wider circle of friends.
Yet, amid the grief at her burial, the dominant message from the tributes was that her life had left behind a legacy that would outlive her.
The Ekwueme family described Nnenna as a peaceful, loving, kind, compassionate, selfless and faithful woman, while praying that the values she demonstrated would continue to shape the lives of those she left behind.
For the family, the burial was not only an occasion to mourn her passing but also an opportunity to celebrate the 45 years of life, faith, family and service that made Nnenna Nwanwene memorable to those who knew her.
She is survived by her husband, three children, siblings, relatives and numerous loved ones.
