LAGOS/Nigeria: The Health Writers Association of Nigeria has expressed profound grief over the death of one of its pioneer members, Matthew Ukachunwa, describing his passing as a significant loss to journalism and specialised health reporting in the country.
In a statement jointly signed by its President, Vivian Ihechu, and Secretary, Temitope Obayendo, the association said Ukachunwa’s death in the early hours of February 16 had thrown colleagues and the wider media community into mourning.
The late journalist, who worked with New Nigerian Newspapers Ltd., was described as a consummate professional whose discipline, dedication and quiet excellence inspired peers and younger reporters alike. According to HEWAN, he was widely respected for his calm disposition, strong ethical standards and meticulous attention to assignments.
Ihechu noted that Ukachunwa’s reputation for punctuality and professionalism was legendary, recalling that he consistently demonstrated unwavering commitment to his duties and to the association’s activities. She said he was dependable, supportive and always ready with constructive counsel, adding that his presence at professional engagements was constant and impactful.
The association further observed that his death came only days after he attended a capacity-building workshop organised by the Lagos State Health Management Agency for health journalists on February 13, where he was honoured with an “Early Bird” award for arriving ahead of other participants.
HEWAN extended condolences to his family, colleagues, and the entire journalism fraternity, praying for strength and comfort for his loved ones as they mourn a journalist it described as a model of professionalism and integrity.
