ASABA/Nigeria: The Delta State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) has raised concerns over the worsening impacts of climate change, urging governments, institutions, corporate organisations and citizens to take immediate and deliberate actions to protect the environment and secure a sustainable future.
In a statement marking the 2026 World Environment Day celebration, signed by the Chairman of the Institute, Godfrey C. Osakwe, fnipr, the Chapter said the world is facing a critical environmental moment, warning that nature is sending clear signals that can no longer be ignored.
According to the statement, rising sea levels, devastating floods, prolonged droughts, extreme heatwaves, wildfires and rapidly melting glaciers are unmistakable indicators that climate change is accelerating at an alarming pace across the globe.
The Institute noted that repeated warnings from the United Nations regarding unprecedented glacier melt and an impending global water crisis underscore the urgency of the situation. It further pointed to scientific findings showing that the world is already exceeding the critical 1.5-degree Celsius warming threshold, a development that continues to heighten environmental and socio-economic risks.
NIPR stressed that urgent collective efforts are needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reverse the trend of global warming before its consequences become irreversible.
The Chapter observed that while climate action has often been delayed by denial, distraction and indecision, encouraging signs are beginning to emerge around the world. It cited the growing adoption of solar energy, expansion of wind power projects, sustainable urban development initiatives and forest restoration programmes as evidence that meaningful change is possible.
It said the global theme for this year’s World Environment Day, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future. #NowForClimate,” reflects the need for humanity to respond positively to the environmental challenges confronting the planet through sustained and responsible action.
The Institute therefore called on governments, institutions, businesses and communities to embrace environmentally responsible practices, including reducing carbon emissions, supporting renewable energy initiatives, preserving forests and biodiversity, promoting environmental sanitation and proper waste management, encouraging tree planting, and adopting sustainable lifestyles.
Addressing residents of Delta State, NIPR emphasized that environmental stewardship begins with individual actions and urged citizens to align with global best practices in environmental governance, cleanliness, conservation and responsible management of natural resources.
The Institute also commended nations, organisations and individuals worldwide that continue to champion environmental sustainability through innovative policies and impactful actions. It further congratulated the Government and people of Azerbaijan, particularly the city of Baku, for hosting the global observance of World Environment Day 2026.
Reaffirming its commitment to environmental advocacy, the Institute urged all stakeholders to be inspired by nature and take meaningful steps toward climate action, stressing that the future of humanity depends on the decisions and actions taken today.
