Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Universal Basic Education Commission

ASABA/Nigeria: No fewer than 300 newly employed Mathematics and Science teachers in Delta State are set to undergo a five-day residential training workshop as part of efforts to reposition basic education delivery.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Delta State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in conjunction with the Universal Basic Education Commission, the Federal Ministry of Education and the Delta State Government, seeks to promote innovative and activity-based teaching methodologies in classrooms across the 25 local government areas of the state.

Executive Chairman of Delta SUBEB, Hon. Barr. Samuel Mariere, and the Director of Teacher Development Department, SUBEB, Mrs. Eru Ezefili, in a joint statement, said the training forms part of the Strengthening Mathematics and Science Education (SMASE) State In-Service Education and Training (INSET) Cycle 1 programme for newly recruited teachers.

According to the statement, the workshop is a specialised capacity-building initiative designed to improve the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science at the basic education level through the adoption of Activities, Students, Experiments and Improvisation (ASEI), and Plan, Do, See and Improve (PDSI) approaches.

The Board explained that the emphasis of the training is on a paradigm shift from traditional teacher-centred methods to a modern, learner-centred approach where students actively participate in classroom instruction, experimentation and problem-solving.

The training, with the theme “Attitudinal Change in the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics and Science,” is residential and scheduled to hold from Monday, February 16 to Friday, February 20, 2026, at Anglican Girls Grammar School, Ughelli, in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily.

Participants drawn from the 25 local government areas are expected to undergo intensive practical and theoretical sessions aimed at strengthening subject mastery, classroom delivery techniques and innovative instructional practices.

The statement urged all nominated teachers to attend the workshop with their Android phones, science laboratory coats and National Identification Number (NIN) slips, stressing that full participation throughout the five-day programme is mandatory.

SUBEB reaffirmed its commitment to continuous professional development of teachers as a strategic pathway to improving learning outcomes and sustaining quality basic education across Delta State.
