OBIARUKU/Nigeria: The All Progressives Congress leadership in Delta State may be applauding a smooth and coordinated congress across most local government areas, but the situation in Ukwuani Local Government Area tells a different story, where a disputed exercise resulted in the emergence of two competing chairmen.
The Local Government Congress in the area, expected to align with the consensus outcomes recorded elsewhere in the state ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections, instead produced a dramatic split as rival factions declared Solomon Osakwe and Churchill Edem winners at separate venues.
Party sources said the development reflects long-standing tensions rooted in competing political interests and unresolved alignments within the local party structure. Observers noted that factional rivalries have historically shaped political contests in the area, often complicating attempts to build a unified platform.
Supporters of Osakwe argue that his political structure commands significant grassroots backing, while loyalists of Edem insist his leadership represents continuity and loyalty to the party’s foundational base in the locality. The rivalry reportedly intensified during the congress as parallel meetings held by opposing camps each affirmed its preferred candidate as chairman.
Analysts say the unusual outcome underscores broader challenges confronting party cohesion at the grassroots level, where competing loyalties and divergent visions for leadership continue to test unity. They warn that unresolved disputes could weaken mobilisation efforts if not swiftly addressed.
Attention has now shifted to the state leadership of the party, which stakeholders say must intervene decisively to determine the legitimate executive and restore cohesion, a step considered crucial for stabilising the party’s structure in Ukwuani ahead of future electoral contests.
