Nigerian Students Urge President Tinubu to Investigate Ajaokuta Steel Company Mismanagement

IBADAN/Nigeria: In a fervent plea for transparency and accountability, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has raised alarm over alleged misconduct within the Ajaokuta Steel Company.

The student body, representing over 50 million members nationwide, issued a statement on Monday calling on President Bola Tinubu to launch a comprehensive investigation into reported mismanagement within the company.

The association’s president, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, “If there are individuals or group of individuals protecting the corrupt managers of the Ajaokuta Steel Company… it simply means that they are beneficiaries of the ill-gotten proceeds of the mismanagement.” Emonefe further stressed the need to probe those shielding the alleged offenders, asserting that such actions undermine President Tinubu’s anti-corruption efforts.

Additionally, NANS implored the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices & Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to remain steadfast in their investigation despite any attempts at intimidation or obstruction.

The association underscored the importance of concurrently reviving the company while probing wrongdoing, asserting that such efforts are mutually reinforcing. Emonefe stated, “As the revamping of this company is going on, the probing of these culprits should aggressively continue,” emphasizing that uncovering and addressing corruption is integral to the company’s revitalization.

Moreover, NANS highlighted concerns regarding the prolonged tenure of a sole administrator overseeing Ajaokuta Steel Company, cautioning against unchecked power that could facilitate corruption. Emonefe advocated for a decentralized power structure within the institution to ensure accountability and effectiveness.

The association emphasized the inclusive ownership of the national project, rejecting any single tribe’s claim to sole ownership based on geographical location. Emonefe asserted, “No single tribe, out of the over 200 tribes in Nigeria has the right to lay claim of sole ownership to this government project,” emphasizing the need to safeguard the company as a national asset.

In commendation of President Tinubu’s commitment to the company’s development, NANS expressed appreciation for his unprecedented support. The association also acknowledged the efforts of Senator Godswill Akpabio and other stakeholders in advancing the company’s revival.

However, NANS cautioned against the impunity of individuals responsible for the company’s decline, urging swift action to hold them accountable. Emonefe warned against repeating past mistakes, emphasizing the importance of deterring future misconduct to ensure the company’s sustainable growth and prevent further mismanagement.

In conclusion, NANS reiterated its unwavering dedication to ensuring financial accountability and transparency within Ajaokuta Steel Company, pledging to continue advocating for the interests of Nigerian students and the nation as a whole.
