The IGP Prosecution of ASP Nuhu Derails True Justice (OPINION)

The fatal shooting of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State, on April 26, 2026, has continued to generate widespread outrage, following the circulation of a viral video showing a police officer, ASP Nuhu K. Usman, allegedly shooting a handcuffed man identified as Mene Ogidi.

According to accounts surrounding the incident, the victim had reportedly gone to collect a parcel at Effurun Park on behalf of an individual said to be based in Sapele. Unaware of the contents, he was intercepted by a police team acting on intelligence. The parcel was subsequently opened and found to contain a Beretta pistol with four rounds of live ammunition.

Eyewitness footage shows the suspect denying ownership of the parcel while restrained in handcuffs and pleading for his life. He reportedly offered to lead officers to the owner of the parcel before the situation escalated.

Despite these pleas, the officer allegedly opened fire, shooting the suspect before he was transported to the Area Command, where he later died.

The incident sparked immediate anger within the community, as residents and commuters gathered at the Effurun Police Command to protest what they described as an extrajudicial killing. The situation briefly turned chaotic, with reports of property damage and attempts to attack police facilities before security operatives dispersed the crowd using tear gas.

The Delta State Police Command condemned the incident, describing the officer’s actions as a violation of professional standards. Authorities confirmed that the officer and other members of the team have been arrested and transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for further investigation and disciplinary action.

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has also directed that the officers involved be subjected to dismissal and prosecution in line with established procedures, stressing that no offence justifies the use of lethal force against a restrained suspect.

While investigations are ongoing, the incident has reignited public concern over police conduct, particularly allegations of excessive force and abuse of power. Some residents have shared past experiences involving similar encounters, raising questions about accountability within the system.

Observers note that beyond disciplinary measures, there is a growing demand for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the case, including the origin of the parcel and all individuals connected to the incident.

Stakeholders have emphasised that ensuring justice in this case will require transparency, due process and institutional accountability, particularly in addressing broader concerns about policing standards and public trust.
